Random musings

  • The thing I am looking forward to the most this Halloween is spending time with my family. It used to be dressing up and trick-or-treating, then Halloween parties, then Simpsons' Treehouse of Horror. In recent years, my friends and I used to watch a scary movie every year in October, but most of those who went with me have moved away.

  • People in customer service jobs have been friendlier today.....perhaps it's the prospect of candy.

  • I have been told the book "The Kite Runner" is a pretty wicked read, but I find myself rather reluctant to pick it up. Maybe it's because the type of story I like to lose myself in doesn't include the war in Afghanistan. I suppose it's a good book nonetheless. Instead, I've restarted HP.

  • The parking lot in my apartment complex is being repaved, and although I am glad for this new and improved lot, it is highly inconvenient. My apartment is at the end of the lot, and they're paving the entrance, so I can park in front of my place....provided I am able to Canyonaro it from the fire lane. So at the moment I am two blocks away. I suppose the walk won't kill me, and it's not -30 outside, but competing for the very limited space on the street is frustrating. And yes, I said "canyonaro".

  • My Billy bookcase is sitting unused. After my brother and my dad put it together while I was in Toronto, they discovered that it completely topples over if you put something in it. My 200 lbs of nursing textbooks are still in boxes, in which PRi's mom pointed out while over for dinner. Hopefully it just means that the bookshelf needs to be moved to the linoleum near the door, instead of the living room. I am sad I can't use it.

Adventures with WestJet, Ford, Fiz, and the Wild Beast

So PRi and I are back from our trip to Toronto for Fiz's wedding...and though we are both not looking forward to the inevitable return to daily living and work, we are also glad the week is over. *sigh*

It all started on Wednesday with our "morning" flight. PRi and I arrived at the airport 25 minutes before departure, but couldn't board the plane. We were put on standby for another flight. Meanwhile, breakfast at Tim's was in order. Not only did PRi realize her wallet was missing while standing in line, but they royally screwed up our order, nearly causing me to boycott Tim's forever (though highly unlikely while I still work nights). Then we board our next flight, get kicked off because of another flight cancellation, and watch our ~second~ plane take off without us. Six hours later, we finally board another plane that actually left the ground with PRi and I really buckled in, and ready to fight tooth-and-nail to stay aboard. After circling Toronto for an hour, we landed in BUFFALO, NY to refuel because Pearson Airport was closed due to fog. At this point, you just have to laugh. PRi and I joked about the dollar being so good, that we could just go shopping, but unfortunately there were no customs agents available at midnight to get us back on the plane. An hour later, we were up in the air, and praying we landed in Toronto, and not Ottawa. We did manage to land in Toronto, but very very late. I was lucky the Budget counter was still open, and even though there was only one vehicle left, I took it.

Do you think I was lucky enough to get the Rendezvous this time?
No.
At least this Taurus didn't leak radiator fluid. Boo.
So anywho, I pick up the car and start my way down the 401 looking for my hotel. In a ridiculous amount of fog. My knuckles were probably ghostly white from holding on to the steering wheel so tight. Not only was it 2am, but you couldn't see 10 feet in front of you. Stupid fog. We get to the hotel only to find that they were in the process of cancelling my reservation (come on, I was only 12 hours late!).

And that was only the first day! LOL

The remainder of the trip went well for the most part. Thursday was spent downtown at the CN Tower and Hockey Hall of Fame, with a break for tea at the Fairmont Royal York. Go Morgo for parking right next to the Air Canada Centre ~during~ a Leafs game. Go Oilers. We went to the zoo on Friday, and I totally loved it! Everything was absolutely gorgeous, and PRi and I walked for miles enjoying the scenery, animals, and the fact that we were there on the off-season. Though all the walking and 100% humidity were not friends with my ankles, and PRi's knees, we did indulge in the hot tub and sauna back at the hotel.

Saturday was Fiz's wedding...the reason why we were in Toronto in the first place. PRi and I went for "breakfast" with her aunt and uncle at a dim sum restaurant in Markham, and then rushed back to the hotel to get ready. I had never been to a traditional Muslim wedding, but I had a blast. The guests were in gorgeous attire of every colour. The food was amazing. Everyone was determined to have a good time, and celebrate the union of the happy couple. Good times were had. I still can't believe Fiz is really married, though. Fiz! Congratulations to you and Farah!

The weather turned from very very foggy and misty on Thursday, to record-high temperatures on Sunday. A perfect day to spend at Canada's Wonderland, I think. The park wasn't open the last time I was in Toronto (instead we amused ourselves with BOARD, pizza parties, singing bras, and Niagara Falls!), so I was pretty excited this time around. The adrenaline junkie in me relished in the amazing amount of roller coasters that had "high speeds and/or heights, aggressive and unexpected forces, and rapid directional or elevation change". Yay thrill rides! All was well until the Wild Beast. At this old school wooden roller coaster, PRi strained her neck, and therefore opted out on the rides. It was getting near closing time, though, and we had enjoyed most of the rides we wanted to earlier in the day anyways. But PRi's neck is feeling somewhat better now, so hopefully things are ok.

Like all excursions, this one had to end sometime. Monday we came home (on the first airplane, might I add!) and had to face returning to work. We couldn't let one bad experience put us off travelling, though. PRi is anxiously awaiting her next vacation, and I have already started my count down. 30 more sleeps!

Settling in

Surprisingly I've enjoyed being a homebody over the last couple of days. I had the long weekend off work, so apart from moving and eating, I've been slowly getting my act together and organizing my life. Things have moved from boxes to shelves, or from boxes to the floor. I've made a lot of shopping trips than I'd like, but I've been able to control how much I've spent. It's been fun, really.

I'm still getting used to being moved, but things are going well. I do miss my dog, though. It's quiet around here.
Otherwise, it's been the same old same old. I'm about to start 5 night shifts tomorrow, so I want to take care of as much as I can now. As soon as I'm done nights, PRi and I are off to Toronto! I should empty my suitcase first, I think.

Moved

The past few weeks have brought a lot of stress, emotions, sore muscles, and boxes...but I am now officially moved! yay me! It's been one helluva ride for sure.

I have been an emotional wreck for a while, feeling excited, scared, and everything in between. It was strange seeing the room you filled with experiences become emptier by the hour. Part of me was sad to let go of items that have been with me for years, and yet another part of me was excited about the possibility of filling that void with new memories. It's going to take a while to get used to being on my own. It doesn't quite feel like home yet, and I know that will come eventually. But in the meantime, I am trying to busy myself with arranging furniture, and shopping for extra stuff that I know PRi and I will need (like extra cutlery....you can never have too many spoons).

I think this will be good for me, though. I've been ready to move for a while, but it doesn't make it any easier once it comes down to it, I guess.
